Les historiens français et les États-Unis dans les années 1950 et 1960
Abstract
Why was American history as an academic discipline introduced in France only in 1967? Did ideological disputes during the Cold War play a role? This article analyses what some French historians thought of the United States in the 1950's and 60's including Jean-Baptiste Duroselle, Claude Fohlen, Lucien Febvre and Fernand Braudel. It tries to demonstrate that those who viewed themselves as pro-American favored the development of American studies in France, whereas those who viewed themselves as anti-American showed no interest.
