The design of a chiller plant refers to determining the cooling capacity of the system and its configuration. Its configuration is given by the type and total of chillers, the distribution of the nominal load and the hydraulic arrangement between them. Determining these elements correctly is a key moment that defines the energy efficiency of these systems and has an impact on the costs where it will be part. To make the same, engineers use recommendations that in one way or another have perpetuated becoming established rules. This article summarizes the fundamental steps to be followed in plant design, as well as a critical analysis of the evolution of design methodologies. Its objective is to present studies on the subject, as well as to highlightspecific results and expose those deficiencies that prevent an optimal design of these systems.
