After briefly examining the pronatalist policy of Ceausescu's regimen and its consequences on women's reproductive health, some results of female emigration from Romania to Italy are taken into consideration, as the phenomenon of children left behind. What is called Sindrom Italia is also examined: this interpretation of distress presented as consequence of migration is becoming increasingly common among Romanian psychiatrists and in public and media arena. Both children left behind and SindromItalia contribute to blaming migrant women, and to spreading a moral panic, hiding both the women’s efforts of to maintain ties in the diaspora, and the economic and structural reasons behind the migration. Public and media discourses are also meant in order to create a regimen of truth about the proper women position in Rumanian society.
