This essay is a reformulation of the concept of negative solidarity. It begins with a critical reflection on the idea of negative reciprocity, particularly as it was developed by Marshall Sahlins in 1963, and on its connection to evolutionary theory, and then offers a distinction between “symmetrical” and “asymmetrical” forms of negative reciprocity. The piece is dedicated to the second of these forms, and it develops an argument about the significance of negative reciprocity for exchange theory and for the comparative sociology of modernity. It concludes with an analysis of a specific example of a national narrative that is founded on negative reciprocity.
