The changes occurred in the last two decades in most fields of activity and mediated by ICT are producing important resonances in the teaching and learning relationship, especially in the production, distribution and consumption of instructional materials. The aim of this paper is to introduce the concept of learning objects (LO) as a new multidisciplinary way to think, produce, distribute and consume instructional resources in virtual learning environments. A brief review of the literature is presented, focusing particularly on the definition, advantages and pedagogical implications of the learning objects.
