This article aims to expose the main consequences that occurred in the military field following the battle of Adrianople. In this sense, we tend to highlight elements of continuity and discontinuity in the transition from the 4th to the 5th century, trying to find the main factors underlying the evolution. It is, therefore, necessary to examine the Roman military response, especially by the emperor Theodosius. A reaction occurred not only in military activities aimed at containing the problems, which go beyond this discussion, but also in the reorganization of the Roman command. In this sense, it is fundamental to question the extent of this change, which is sometimes given the definition of “Theodosian military reform”.
