This paper focuses on the underlying parallelisms between Fernando Chueca Goitia's scholarly approach to eighteenth-century Spanish architecture and, specifically, to the work of Juan de Villanueva and Hans Sedlmayr's grasp of the decisive role of Roman baroque models in Fischer von Erlach's architecture. Chueca and Sedlmayr agreed upon the vast European impact of Roman settecento art, something Italian historians had only began to consider at the time. In spite of their different professional backgrounds, both were engrossed with methodological issues directly related to their pursuit of a global history, which for them meant a Kulturgeschichte attuned to their own times.
