The Manifestations of Identity and Heritage in Contemporary Algerian Poetry
Abstract
Abstract: Algerian literature vividly reflects the people's struggle against French colonization, with poetry and prose that chronicled and celebrated the armed revolution's heroic deeds. Following independence, writers focused on reinforcing Algerian Islamic Arab identity by drawing inspiration from Arab Islamic heritage. This heritage became a central source of inspiration for poets as they sought to shape a new national reality. Algerian poets, after independence, turned to Islamic culture and heritage, which they deeply revered, to revive and embed this heritage into their works. This was part of a broader effort to rebuild and fortify a strong, independent nation. Contemporary Algerian poetry is marked by its themes of struggle, patriotism, and calls for intellectual, social, and political reform. Poets employed Quranic stories and national and popular heritage to construct a genuine Arab Islamic identity, navigating contemporary challenges while adapting positively to other civilizations. Keywords: Algerian Literature, Islamic Identity, Heritage, Algerian Poetry, Contemporary.
