INTRODUCTION: Nurses belonging to a health branch provide health care services for the purpose of protecting, maintaining and improving health of the individual, group or community. It is known that societies agree upon importance of those professions undertaking functions which are vital for them. Nurses who have such an important role are required to plan their careers in a manner enabling them to fulfill their responsibilities in the best way possible. For this reason, there is a need for a tool to evaluate nurses professional capability objectively to be promoted. METHODS: It is a descriptive and retrospective research. The sample of the study consists of 128 nurses who work in the largest private health care provider in Turkey. The data were collected by using the 12-item 'Nursing Services Upper Position Candidate Evaluation Form' created with the literature. The data were collected from the human resources archive and hospitals between 2016. The results of the research were evaluated with the percentage and frequency in SPSS 22.0 program. RESULTS: In the group where the study was carried out, the highest promotion was in the group with five years or more professional experience, they have often taken additional duties before being appointed to an upper position, it is seen that English and additional foreign language knowledge rates are high, and they are highly preferred by their teammates. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: To conclude, ‘Candidate Assessment Form for a Higher Ranking Position', a career guidance form, offers an environment where it is easier for managers to make more accurate, fairer choices and analyze demographic characteristics and competences of a person. Data covering only one year of the form examined have been analyzed, and it is recommended to conduct a more comprehensive research covering other years with a view to observing how the perception of promotion varies year over year.
