Apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) is one of the most common diseases of apple trees and is associated with most chemical treatments in apple orchards. The current need to reduce the environmental burden and risks for consumers leads to a demand for ecological solutions to this problem. The aim of this work was to compare scab infestation in three apple varieties (‘Rubinola’, ‘Gala’, and ‘Melrose’) under two different spray programs, i.e. an organic program using Cuprotonic (copper and zinc-based fertilizer), PowerOf-K (potassium fertilizer) Chitopron 5% (chitosan hydrochloride), and Imunofol (zinc and chitosan hydrochloride based biostimulant) as well as a conventional program including common fungicides. A highest efficiency of 65 % on leaves and 75 % on fruits was observed with the resistant variety ‘Rubinola’ using the organic spray program. In contrast, the efficiency of the organic program for the sensitive varieties ‘Gala’ and ‘Melrose’ was 44–49 % on the leaves whereas only 26–30 % on the fruits. The effectiveness of the alternative preparations in relation to different apple varieties is discussed.
