Critical Synthesis Package: Helpful Responses Questionnaire (HRQ)
Abstract
Abstract This Critical Synthesis Package contains: (1) a Critical Analysis of the psychometric properties and application to health sciences education for the Helpful Responses Questionnaire (HRQ); and (2) a copy of the HRQ instrument and scoring key. The HRQ is designed to measure the development of reflective listening and empathy skills. These skills are central to the implementation of motivational interviewing in mental health, addiction, and social service settings. As suggested by the HRQ authors, the instrument has also been modified for training in physical therapy, primary care, and interprofessional health team settings and has been used effectively across health care setting for addiction and crisis counseling. It has also shown promise in undergraduate medical education training during the clinical years of training. It would be entirely feasible to use the HRQ to further evaluate the effectiveness of motivational interviewing training and curriculum efforts in student, resident, health care worker, or faculty clinical training. This instrument also demonstrates promise as a feasible tool to measure the effectiveness of a motivational interviewing longitudinal curriculum addressing client and patient behavior change across multiple health care settings. Though the HRQ demonstrates adequate validity and reliability, further studies would strengthen its utility.
