From the archives produced by the municipality of Provins in the 13th and 14th centuries, it is possible to describe the early investment of the inhabitants of the city in vineyards and the emergence, from the beginning of the 14th century on, of a group of wine growers. The acts of transmission of goods signed in the presence of the aldermen throw light on the reasons for this investment and for the importance of the transmission of wine-making tools. The list of the voters from a ballot organized in 1323 allows us to outline the social and occupational group of the wine growers and to show that they differ clearly from ploughmen in a context of strong specialization of work.
