USE OF EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE MEANS FOR REPRESENTING THE ATMOSPHERE OF TOTAL PSYCHOLOGICAL CONTROL IN 1984 by G. ORWELL
Abstract
The article deals with the stylistic devices employed by the author of the novel with the purpose of demonstrating the ways of human mind manipulation in the totalitarian society. The research was conducted on the materials of the relatively complete text within the boundaries of the linguistic school known as the decoding stylistics. The purpose of our work is to analyse the use of stylistic means of the language in the discourse. For the sake of analysis, we chose an extract from the novel that depicts the procedures of the so-called “Two Minutes Hate”. The methodology. In our work we employed the contextual analysis method, the componential analysis of the lexical meaning, the method of thematic net. The results. The conducted analysis showed that in order to depict the ritual Two Minutes Hate, the author resorts to multifarious stylistic means on the basis of the contrast principle. This principle enables to clearly disclose the absolute antihuman essence of the totalitarian regime. At the same time it reveals the author’s irony towards the ritual events conducted by the authorities by means of the stereotype propaganda. Practical implications. The results of the research can be used when developing academic courses in Text Linguistics, Lexicology and Semasiology, in practical classes in English Stylistics and modern English Literature.
