Des ensembles composites : appropriation et transformation des demeures ottomanes suburbaines d’Alger aux xixe et xxe siècles
Abstract
Citing several case studies, the article analyzes the processes whereby Ottoman-era homes on the outskirts (or fahs) of Algiers were transformed. It examines many aspects of these makeovers: the context (the property transfer of early colonization), the agents, and the type of renovation. In particular, it aims to demonstrate that alongside radical actions like demolition or abandonment, other appropriation phenomena emerged. Combining preservation and decorative invention, today these dwellings contribute to asserting the singularity of Algiers architecture.
