Newer imaging and staging techniques have improved the rate of early diagnosis, as well as treatment, of colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRLM). The inclusion of local ablation methods and radiotherapy to deal with initially unresectable metastases has further revolutionized the treatment of CRLM. A few grey areas which need to be evaluated are the role of positron emission tomography (PET) scan, diagnostic laparoscopy, surgical management of synchronous metastases, chemotherapy for resectable metastases and the role of radiofrequency ablation (RFA). This article highlights the literature on the protocol available for the diagnosis of and various therapeutic options for CRLM.
