無In the Western society, university press has been developed for long. It needs the university administrator's spiritual and financial support Besides, it needs a professional leader with the scholarly authority and financial insight to survive in a highly competitive publishing world. This article is divided into six sections, including: 1.introduction, describing research motivation and methodology; 2. the roles and functions of university press; 3. remarkable university presses including Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, and Chicago universities' presses; 4. the establishment of the university presses in China; 5. survey on twenty one universities in Taiwan concerning publishing expenditure, personnel and distribution; 6. conclusion and recommendation.
