Ural Geological Survey Organization by the Department of Mining and Salt Industries during the 2nd Quarter of the 19th Century
Abstract
The article reviews the organization of geological survey in the Ural state ironworks in the second quarter of the 19th century. The survey of the Ural mineral resources began in the 18th century and was carried out by the Academy of Sciences’ expeditions. At the same time, the heads of Ural ironworks Tatishchev and Gennin organized the search for mineral deposits and drawing up of their maps and plans. In the second quarter of the 19th century, the Department of Mining and Salt Industries established geological field parties in the state mining districts in the Urals held by mining specialists. The parties’ activity led to the creation of gold and ore deposits as well as geological maps. The Department of Mining and Salt Industries also created research groups for the exploration of remote areas in the Northern Urals and the search for gold deposits.
