LGBT rights in El Salvador have certainly showed some improvement over the last decade, with the formation of a real LGBT movement, increased media exposure, public visibility and certain institutional advances. However, to qualify this as a revolution is undoubtedly an exaggeration since much violence and discrimination remain. The meager institutional progress appears fragile and has not produced any actual social change. The reasons for this lie in the legal strategy adopted and the absence of political engagement, which has considerably weakened the arguments put forward. The resulting homonormatization, together with the influence of religion, has led to the depoliticization of the LGBT struggle in the country. Only minimal evolution has occurred, and this has not enabled real social change to take place.
