Modos de vida, territórios e uma cidade em questão: resistências políticas de comunidades rurais no município de São Luís – Maranhão, Brasil
Abstract
This articles studies the political activism of the rural communities of the village of São Luís, in the Brazilian state of Maranhão. Their collective actions are described through the different ways they have found to reclaim their territories and protect their means of survival, which are threatened by industrial and port activities. This article presents the development scenario of the 1980s, symbolized by the building of large projects in Eastern Amazonia, more specifically in the state of Maranhão. It stresses the emergence of protest movements in the 1980s and shows how they influence contemporary events. It will also show how the political activism of these rural communities evolved into larger social movements which mobilized important political actors. Lastly, the article suggests new ways of managing ressources and territories, through the example of the creation of an extraction reservation and other forms of traditional land uses, uncluding within sacred territories.
