This article presents examples of the recent development of the bioeconomy in the European Union (EU) and the United States, in order to identify important elements that can contribute to the development of the bioeconomy in Brazil. The analytical framework of the article comprises four categories of analysis: background information; governance, which seeks to examine the national strategy, policies and domestic actors of the bioeconomy in the EU and the US; measurement and monitoring, and the main sectors and research, development and innovation (RD&I) of the bioeconomy. Coordination among actors is essential for joining efforts and advancement; it is also important to define whether the core of the Brazilian bioeconomy will have a more holistic approach, as in the EU, or more focused on new technologies, tools, and sciences, as in the US. Examples of public-private partnerships as in the EU and public procurement programs as in the US are important incentive mechanisms for development and Brazil will be able to learn from these experiences to build its own mechanismsis article presents examples of the recent development of the bioeconomy in the European Union and the United States, in order to identify important elements that can contribute to the development of the bioeconomy in Brazil.
