This article aims to describe the background and process of founding the University of Oriente, which ran between 1947 and 1951 mainly, though not until 1952 that will define the main symbols of image and identity. It argues the crucial role played by the people in their establishment and Eastern legalization as well as the idea that his creation was an attempt to revamp higher education in Cuba, under the conditions and limits imposed neocolonial bourgeois republic 1902.
