Abstract

There was a boom in medieval literature in the world of Tamil Literature. The Vaishnavite Alwars gifted the glories of Lord Vishnu to Tamil Literature. They have made a great contribution to Tamil literature by giving rich poetic hymns of literary taste. The songs sung by the twelve Alwars worshipping Thirumal and praising his glories became to known as “Nalayira Dhivya Prabantham” (Four Thousand Divine Hymns). The commentators on the Alwars were the ones who made the world of the Divine prophets and their meanings known to the admirers of Vaishnava philosophy. Among them, Nathamunigal compiled the Divine Prabhandas and evinced their significance all over the world. It is the tradition of Vaishnavism to make Nathamuni the first compiler. After him, Vuyakkondar and the Manakkalnambi, Aalavanthar, Periyanambikal, and Thirumalayantan seem to have come under discourses until the time of Ramanujar. Ramanujar is a great personality to have brought about a great upsurge in the Vaishnava tradition. He first wrote the text with his disciple Thirukurugaipiran Pillai in Six Thousand verses for Thiruvaimozhi. This was followed by the complete texts of Thiruvaimozhi, such as the nineteen thousand verses of Nanjiyar, the twelve thousand verses of Vadikesarialagiye Manavala Iyer and the twenty-four thousand verses of the Periyavachan Pillai and the thirty-six thousands of the Nampillai. The rise of the “Thiruvaimozhi” text led to the Four Thousand Divya Prabhanda. Periyavachan Pillai is credited with interpreting the entire Four Thousand Divya Prabhandas. Hence, Periyavachan Pillai is called the authority of vyakiyana (Commentary). In that connection, Prof. N. Subbu Reddiar presents various concepts embedded in the ancient commentaries of Vaishnava Manipravala texts, texts discourses, discourse physiology phrases, dissociation of Tamil language, ascendant therapeutic philosophy will be the main feature of this research paper.
