La Celestina in the Spanish Cinema of Democracy. Adaptation, Censorship, and Reception of the Cinematographic Recreation of Gerardo Vera
Abstract
This article examines, firstly, the personal, creative, technical obstacles and the censorship that movie director Gerardo Vera and his cast went through before, during, and after filming the movie La Celestina (1996). To this effect, as well as to sustain this claim "beyond fidelity", I use in this article interviews, new releases, and other first-hand sources. Secondly, the controversy in the Spanish media surrounding the "high" erotic content of the film. However, as Vera mentions in a personal interview, he did not only want to emulate the treatment that Fernando de Rojas gives to this component in his literary work, but to be able to adapt it on the screen without the cumbersome process and the censorship César Ardavín's Celestina suffered during Franco's Regime. And finally, the free treatment and personal interpretation that Vera offers in this Celestina's second film adaptation.
