Among the innovations Pero López de Ayala introduced in his historiographical work, compared with that of the previous chroniclers, there is a massive insertion of other people’s discourses, using reported speech or direct statements, which seems to let us hear without intermediary the words of the different actors of History. This process creates in the Ayalin text an effect of dialogism, which, at first, participates in the characterization of the chronicler himself, as it underlines his will of exhaustiveness, his capacity for accessing the sources and his research of objectivity. But, using examples from the Crónica del Rey don Pedro, we will also see that this interlacing of voices, which Ayala selects and arranges with great mastery, turns the chronicler into a arbiter of truth and introduces in a surreptitious but terribly effective way, a particular reading of events, favourable to the new Trastamare dynasty and to the Chancellor’s aristocratic ideology.
