Reasons for Permanent Tooth Extraction in Governmental Dental Care Centers in Sari, 2020

Background and purpose: Tooth extraction, for any reason, has negative effects on the human psyche. In addition, it causes problems in chewing food, appearance, and speech. The aim of this study was to investigate the causes of permanent tooth extraction in patients attending public health centers in Sari, Iran 2020. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out and 522 who had their teeth extracted were selected by convenience sampling. People aged 18 to 65 years old were included and Chi-square test was used to compare the causes of tooth extraction in men and women and other characteristics. Data analysis was conducted in SPSS V25. Results: Causes of permanent tooth extraction included caries (64.8%), periodontal problems (15.7%), partial occlusion of teeth (6.1%), periapical abscess (5.4%), patient demand (4.8%), trauma (1%), and other reasons (1%). Conclusion: Tooth decay and periodontal diseases were the main reasons for removing permanent teeth in people studied.
