Many players – political, industrial, and medical – are pushing to “accelerate the digital turn” in healthcare. Against a backdrop of reduced resources and spending in this sector, and a crisis in public hospitals and private medicine, the digital transformation of the healthcare system is giving rise to high expectations and many promises. This article analyzes the deployment of digital healthcare from the point of view of the concrete activities of the general practitioners who implement it, the contexts in which it takes place, and the different meanings that professionals give to it. It does so by drawing on an ethnography of medical work in liberal emergency medicine, within SOS Médecins, which offers an original terrain for studying the ways in which actors seize digital technologies and the conditions in which they can be granted caring qualities.
