Contracts and Disagreements. Works conflicts in the theatrical environments (Rio de Janeiro, 1883-1884)

Abstract

The 1880s became known for the demands and participation of the population who took over the streets of Rio de Janeiro, and for the emergence of an associative and demanding culture among different categories of urban workers. Recent research has contributed to illuminating opaque areas of this process, but one subject still remains little investigated: work conflicts in theatrical environments. It is around this theme that the present article develops and for its elaboration the series of serials Scenas Comicas by the actor and playwright Francisco Correa published in the Gazeta da Tarde between 1883 and 1884 was chosen as the main source.
