The subject of the research is the semantics, functions and contextual environment of potential agnonyms of W. Shakespeare’s tragedy King Lear. The article is devoted to English agnonyms and their groups in the text of the play. The purpose of this study is to create a classification of agnonyms in the text of the original. Research methods. The following basic research methods and techniques were used: general scientific methods of analysis, comparison, descriptions (when working with lexical material). The introspective approach to the text was one of the main ones in the selection of material for a scientific article. The study also used: the method of continuous textual sampling, the lexicographic method, component analysis of lexical semantics, methods of generalization and classification, the method of discussion and analysis of lexicographic data of a sociological survey. The results of the work. In Shakespeare’s play King Lear, we identified three main functions of agonyms, i.e. stylistic, expressive, and pragmatic. In addition, two classifications of agnonymic series were grouped according to their functions. The first classification covered grammatical agnonymic series. The second is thematic. For each classification, the necessary groups of agonyms were selected from the text of the analyzed work. The methods for identifying and recognizing agnonyms were defined. The appearance of agnonyms in the text was explained by us by the author’s specific concept, making the text of his work original, original and inimitable in his unique identity, taking into account relevance theory taking into account textual categories of ambiguity saturation based on the cognitive approach – theory of relic concepts. Practical implications. Recommendations on the use of the results of the dissertation research, reflected in this article, consist in the possibility of their use in the development of lecture and practical courses in lexicology, cognitive linguistics, history of the English language, text linguistics, for conducting practical classes on analytical reading of original texts, as well as when writing research papers of different levels. The analysis of the original text of the tragedy for the presence of agonyms in it can form the basis of special courses in historical pragmalinguistics and analytical lexicology.
