Professional Values Among Nursing Managers and Affecting Factors

INTRODUCTION: This study was planned to investigate the professional values of nursing managers and the affecting factors of them as a descriptive type. METHODS: This descriptive study was carried out with 216 nursing managers working in nine hospitals in a city. The data were collected with a Personal Information Form and Nursing Professional Values Scale (NPVS) scales between October 2012 and January 2013. The analysis of the data was obtained by using descriptive statistical, correlation and regression analysis methods in SPSS 20.0. RESULTS: It was reported that 94.4% of the participants were female, 56.0% of them were aged between 31-40 years old, 57.4% had a university degree, 75.9% were married, 56.9% were working in a public hospital and 85.6% were supervisor nurses. It was also noted that 44% of these participants had a professional experience of 11-20 years on average and 86.6% of all participants had a management experience of less than 11 years. NPVS total score of nursing managers was found as 4.10+-18.8. It is determined that there was a positive correlation between professional values of nursing managers' and their educational level (p<0,05). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It is determined that professional values was perceived highly important by nursing managers. Furthermore, it was found that educational level of nursing managers increased, professional values increased as well.
