It is necessary to have knowledge of historic construction techniques in order to understand buildings, and it is a starting point for their restoration. Although we call them "historic techniques", the author says, they are still after all, so studying them can mean an important lesson for us, useful not only for restoration, but for building in general. In the article presented here, Francisco Javier López Martínez, with a long and rich experience, explains in a most didactic manner the concepts of adobe and cob walls (tapias and tapiales) and describes their characteristic features.
