In 2020 parliamentary elections will take place in Georgia. From one side, the country is moving towards democratic reforms and transition to parliamentary form of governance. At the same time, the ruling party «Georgian dream» is more and more criticized, and its attempts to consolidate power increase. The parliamentary discussion of the electoral code reform came as a challenge to the political stability of the country: its result will define which parties will be allowed to take part in the elections and form the parliament that is now going to get new functions and greater influence. Reforms are an important part of Georgia’s political transformation on its way to European integration. The EU, on one hand, has supported Georgia’s transition to parliamentary democracy with all the possible means, on the other had, European officials carefully observe the situation in the country. Peace and competitiveness of the upcoming elections will imply not only political stability, but will indicate Western partners that Georgia is ready for internal change. 2020 elections will also give a change to the new political forced to be more actively involved – among them not only pro-European parties, but also conservative political movements.
