Hepatorenal syndrome is a condition that occurs in patients with chronic liver disease characterized by portal hypertension and it is distinguished by the deterioration of renal function and marked abnormalities in blood circulation, with activation of endogenous vasoactive systems. There is a marked renal artery vasoconstriction that decreases glomerular filtration. The rate of renal arterial resistance measured by color Doppler ultrasound allows to evaluate the degree of renal vasoconstriction in cirrhotic patients complicated with ascites, with or without hepatorenal syndrome.
