Abstract

German organizations and Church leaders were in front line in establishing holistic mission among Jews in the 19th century. Holocaust made a significant change and set a new direction in the approach of protestant churches in Germany towards the Jewish people. Mission, understood as proclamation of the Gospel or attempts of convincing Jews to change belief, was questioned. First, because it would be impossible to proclaim the love of God after the genocide. Second, because a two-covenant theology became more influential, maintaining that God’s covenant with Israel at Sinai is everlasting and an expression of God’s faithfulness towards his people. Israel is preserved as God’s people, independent of their relationship to Jesus as Messiah. This stand also questions the role and identity of Messianic Jews.
