After showing a relative stability in the spatial distribution of the retired people in three surburban metropolitan areas – Paris, Aix-Marseille and Toulouse - this article examines the drivers behind this still important periurban attractiveness. A qualitative analysis enables the authors to underline the tactics and strategies of the retired to remain as long as possible in their living environment. Their discourses well reflect the feeling of anchorage and attachment to the individual dwelling, the ownership, the social environment which was often built on the long term and constitute the so much estimated frame of periurban areas. This research underlines the limits of ageing in outlying areas, however it suggests the possible maturation of these types of places and prompts to take a fresh look at them and at the households who live there.
