The Presentation of World Book Printing History in the Light of Printer's Heritage Collections: Digital Exhibitions of Estienne and Elsevier on the Website of Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine
Abstract
The aim of the article istoreveal the expositional potency of the printer's heritage collection exhibition that presents important periods of the world book printing history. The methodology of the research is thecontent analysis of two electronic expositions, posted on the website of Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine: The rarities of the Estienne's collection and The masterpieces of the world typography - editions of the Elsevier's collection. The novelty of the research is connected with the lack of investigations dedicated to printer's heritage collection presentation, which are critical in exhibition activity of scientific library. The results of the researchdefine three main features of the printer's heritage collection that enhances its informational potency in displaying the history of the world book printing. These are the capacity of collection data to illustrate the full history of the printing house, the attributive features of its editorial production, and the individual features of the collection copies. The exhibitions of the Estienne and Elsevier editions collection are great examples of informational and educational potency of scientific library historic and cultural collections exhibitions. The demonstration of the most significant copies with distinctive content, polygraph decoration, book owner's marks, and provenances enable us to visualize the data from the history of European scientific book printing and its promotion in the territory of early-modern Ukraine. The exhibitions of printer's heritage collections contain data on variants of the editorial mark and show samples of polygraphy style, which make them valuable for library researchers, dealing with the attribution of Estienne and Elsevier editions. The experience of printer’s heritage collection exhibition forming can be used in the exhibition activity of scientific libraries.
