Un moment clé de l’histoire du royaume de Majorque : la fin de la vicomté de Castelnou (1321-1369)
Abstract
A preconceived idea asserts that the viscounty of Castelnou in Catalonia disappeared in 1321 at the instigation of king Sancho of Majorca. Several documents prove that it was not the case and that the viscounty was transmitted to a young daughter of Viscount Jaspert V in 1321. Once adult, Sybilla ceded her rights to King James III of Majorca in exchange for the debt payment of his father and for the amount of her dowry. Her dowry was fixed to 10 000 golden reals when, in 1339, Sybilla married a lord of Dauphiné named Hugues Alleman. Unfortunately the fall of the kingdom of Majorca compromised the execution of the agreement negotiated by the parts. In these conditions, King Peter the Ceremonious had to pay 1 781 and half florins in the name of his cousin in 1353 while Hugues Alleman obtained a financial compensation of 7 000 florins from the parliament of Paris.
