Whether the industry wants to anticipate the new regulations concerning the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, or better control the costs of fluctuating fossil energy, the Bilan Carbone® assessment is a tool available to evaluate the company’s exposure, or even vulnerability, pertaining (related) to these two strategic axes for the development of corporate activity. ITERG has carried out 15 Bilan Carbone® in oils and fats industry. This method is a solution for ranking emissions source by source and a good start to launch a dynamic process to reduce these emissions. In all the cases of the study, the emissions are strongly related to raw materials, freight, packaging, and consumption of fossil energy. The reduction of GHG emissions, is possible with an increased utilisation of the biomass, an improved valorisation of by-products by anaerobic digestion with recovery of the produced biogas for energy needs, and when rail, canals, rivers, or seas are preferably chosen to road transport for freight. In the oleochemicals industry, GHG emissions related to the raw materials can be reduced by the development of bio-lubricants, and innovative new products formulation based on vegetable resources.
