THEORIES OF DEMOCRATIZATION: a culturalist approach

Abstract

The article analyzesthe variables that modernization theory and rational choice theory have revealed as essential for the occurrence of democratization. While understanding the importance of these approaches, he directs the scope of his analysis to another equally important determinant, political culture. The change of social values ends up transforming culture, constituting itself as an indispensable instrument not only for the possibility of democratization, but also for the consolidation of the regime and the quality of democracy.
