無The collection of books in ancient China originated from four sources: 1. official; 2. private; 3. school; 4. temple, which has indelible contributions to the preservation of books and the enhancement of civilization to this country. However, the collections were seldomly available for people in general, until 19th century. This article describes the rise of library system in China from the Opium War (1839-1840) to the last days of Ching dynasty (1909), its background, development, and the western impact upon it.
