The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) promoted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is a triennial international testing of 15-year-olds from OECD and partner countries in science, reading and mathematics. Since the first edition (2000) the results had triggered significant policy discussions in the countries involved. In Romania the poor results at PISA testing sparked the discussions for educational reform only after the 2006 testing. They were used as a diagnostic tool for the educational system which was considered by the proponents of the reform as being inefficient, irrelevant, inequitable and of poor quality. The article presents some of the policies and practices debates in which PISA results were used as an argument and identifies cases in which agendas not related to those results are promoted, even against the real findings from PISA.
