A reconstructed time series of the number of extreme low pressure events since 1880
Abstract
In context with the current discussion on the recent increase of violent storms over the North Atlantic (NA) two time series are discussed in order to give a more reliable evaluation of these extreme events. By means of an existing manually derived time series on the number of extreme low pressure events since winter 1956/57 and a long daily sea-level pressure data set available on northern hemispheric grid points since December 1880 an attempt is made to estimate the number of extreme lows before 1956/57.
