For the increasingly wide usage of stereo images, a stereo image encryption algorithm based on fractional-order hyper-chaotic system and dynamic Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) encoding was proposed. In the chaotic sequence generation stage, SHA-256 hash function is used to construct the initial key, and the key is input into the fractional-order hyper-chaotic system to generate the chaotic sequences. In image encryption stage, at first, chaotic sequences are used for generating S-box. After that, the plain image is permuted by cycle shifting the rows and columns and the permuted image is encoded dynamically using RNA rules and then the Codon sequence is obtained. Then the generated S-box is used for translating RNA sequence. Finally, by using chaotic sequence, the translated image is diffused by exclusive or operation, and the cipher image is obtained. In the experimental simulation part, histogram analysis, correlation analysis of adjacent pixels, information entropy analysis, key sensitivity analysis, and plain-text sensitivity analysis of cipher images were carried out. The analysis results show that the algorithm has good security, and the use of SHA-256 hash function ensures the encryption a “One-Time-Pad” method, which can effectively protect the security of image information.
