Consumption of milk and dairy products in the urban centers of Burkina Faso. The consumption of milk and dairy products, in milk equivalents, in the urban centers of Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso was 12, 4 kg per person and per year in October 1995, of which 10, 54 kg or 85 % came from imports. Consumption of local production comprises only local raw milk (1, 5 kg) and curdled milk (0, 38 kg). Before the F. CFA devaluation, per capita milk consumption in milk equivalents was 22, 1 liters per year in urban areas, of which 91 % was imported. The impact of the devaluation was a decrease of imports in milk equivalents of about 50 %. The buying behavior of households is determined by income and the number and age of household members (especially the number of adults and children below 8 years).
