Since 1850 Sweden has undergone an extensive process of industrialisation and economic development, mostly financed internally. It has done so by developing an organised monetary and financial system for the mobilisation of savings and their transmission to industrial borrowers. As it is the case in England, Swedish monetary institutions have been forced to adapt to an environment that is increasingly influenced by the growth of the public sector and the extent of governmental intervention.
