Using two examples of social housing projects undergoing urban renewal, this article seeks to show how the different actors’ conceptions of proximity intertwine and/or complement each other. It proposes to study the reading of domestic territory through the notion of Care, to understand the way in which proximity is materialized and the reasons for the presence of women as the most representative participants in these actions or local initiatives. The two social housing sites studied are part of the New National Urban Renewal Programme. They are Cité Émile Dubois and La Maladrerie in Aubervilliers, a working-class neighborhood built in the 1980s on the outskirts of the city center. Secondly, a new residence (2020) in the northern districts of Bourges, on the outskirts of a medium-sized town, where social housing predominates. Each of these two programs has a community project run by two associations. In both cases, the initiatives studied are responses to the residential stress of residents faced with the uncertainty created by the urban renewal project.
