Understanding of diabetic patients treated at a hospital in Recife-PE about the disease

Objective: To identify the understanding of diabetics treated at a referral hospital in Recife-PE about their disease. Methods: Across-sectional, analytical and quantitative method, an quiz was conducted with 50 patients in the waiting room. The quiz aimed to evaluate the knowledge of the causes and consequences of the disease, current treatment and adherence to therapy. Results: For 16% of respondents, diabetes mellitus, they report that the disease are metabolic changes and elevated blood sugar levels. According to research data, 30% of respondents claim that their disease could be of hereditary cause, another 18% reported that overeating may have contributed to the onset of the disease. Conclusion: According to the data obtained, it can be concluded that a systematic control of glycemic levels, as well as a change in lifestyle combined with a better understanding of the pathology is fundamental for the prevention of complications and sequelae caused by diabetes melittus;
