It is a known fact that throughout the 17th century, the woollen textile industry in Castile suffered one of its most serious crises. The factory of “La Puebla” in the city of Palencia is a good example of this. Added to the loss of the population growth of the 16th century were the ever-increasing and never-ending tax demands of the Crown, which needed money to pay its enormous expenses. Moreover, local governments found they had, against their will, to increase municipal taxation on the economic activity which was the main and often the only source of income of the local population. In short, this is an example of how indirect taxation was responsible for the crisis of the woollen textile industry in Castile in the 17th century.
