Abstract

Os welfare states enfrentam um trade-off, que parece ser universal, entre a criação de empregos e a igualdade. Apesar da globalização ser um componente do dilema, um estudo comparativo de tipos diferentes de welfare state mostra que os arranjos institucionais e as estratégias nacionais de provisão de bem-estar permanecem como variáveis-chave para avaliar o panorama atual e as perspectivas do welfare state no século XXI.The welfare states face a trade-off that seems to be universal, between the creation of jobs and equality. Despite global interdependence being a feature of the dilema, a comparative study of different kinds of welfare states shows that the institutional makeup and the national strategies of welfare provision persist as key variables for appraising the present panorama and the perspectives of the welfare state in the twentieth-first century.
