Background: chronic kidney disease is a public health problem worldwide. It is important to educate patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment so that they develop the ability to face the disease and improve their quality of life. Objective: to determine the level of resilience in patients treated in the hemodialysis unit of the General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna”, in Las Tunas. Methods: an observational, prospective and cross-sectional study was carried out in 95 patients with terminal chronic renal failure, in the hemodialysis unit declared in the objective, during September-December 2019. The variables: level of resilience, age, state marital status, educational level, religion, length of stay in the hemodialysis unit, were evaluated. The resilience scale developed and validated by Wagnild & Young and the perceived social support scale were used. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. Results: the age group corresponding to early adulthood predominated (between 31 and 45 years with 48.4 %) and those who had been on hemodialysis for more than 24 months (64.2 %). The highest percentage of patients presented a low level of resilience (55.8 %). Almost half had higher education (48.4 %). They showed statistical significance with the level of resilience: the level of education, religiosity, time in the hemodialysis unit and social support; not so marital status and age. Conclusions: the level of resilience in patients with terminal chronic renal failure on hemodialysis was characterized.
