A question which has been intriguing researchers since 1969 is whether covalently linked hormones or growth factors on surfaces are still biologically active i.e. still bind and activate cell surface receptors in the insoluble state. There is evidence of release or leakage of rhBMP-2 covalently linked to self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold surfaces. After detergent wash (SDS), juxtacrine surfaces with rhBMP-2 appear functionally feasible at fM release.
